Mahakavi Kalidasa is known to be the greatest repository of our national heritage. He continues to shine as one of the greatest exponent of Indian Culture. Keeping his memory in view, the department of culture of the Government of Madhya Pradesh established the Kalidasa Akademi in the year 1978 at Ujjain.

Vikram University Vikram University

Vikram University was established in Ujjain on the 1st of March, 1957. The foundation stone of Vikram University was laid by the then Home Minister of India Shri Govind Vallabh Pant on Tuesday, Kartika Krishnapaksha Chaturthi, Vikramabda 2013 i.e. on the 23rd of October, 1956.

Ujjain enjoyed a position of considerable importance in the field of astronomy. Great works on astronomy such as the Surya Siddhanta and the Panch Siddhanta were written in Ujjain. According to Indian astronomers, the Tropic of Cancer is supposed to pass through Ujjain. It is also the fist meridian of longitude of the Hindu geographers. From about the 4th century BC, Ujjain enjoyed the reputation of being India's Greenwich.

The glorious landscape of the flowing river on both sides of the palace and the man-made tanks and channels, with water gurgling through them, provide a spectacular backdrop to the imposing building.

Bhartrihari Caves Bhartrihari Caves

The Bhartrihari Caves have been named after the step brother of Raja Vikramaditya. These caves are located near the holy river Shipra. Bhartrihari lived his lavish life of Mahal and charged himself as hermit because of the conflicts in his family life. He had written Shringarshataka, Vairagyashataka, and Nitishataka there in these caves. These caves are one of the best examples of natural caves.

Other than being a politically and religiously known place, Ujjain is even considered to be the centre of education because of the very fact that Lord Krishna and his best pal, Sudama, received in Guru Sandipani’s ashram here.
